5 Reasons to Read Your Bible (Every Day)

Friends, Ash Wednesday is upon us, which means that the Lenten season will soon begin. Last week, I shared about the importance of observing the liturgical calendar and what that can mean for our walks with Christ. This week, I want to challenge you to think about what could happen if you resolved to read your Bible every day for this season. 40 days. (Ok so it's 40 days and 7 Sundays if you want to get technical about it.) Every day. That's it. But why, you say? I'm so glad you asked.

1. The Bible is the very word of God. 

So often we walk through life wishing God would speak to us, pointing our finger to the sky and wondering why He's silent. But we neglect to spend time in His word, which is who He is. John tells us that in the beginning was the Word, and the Word was God, and the Word was with God. We cannot complain about "God's silence" if we aren't spending time trying to get to know Him.

2. The Bible helps us to know God more. 

Oftentimes it is easy to complain and wonder just who God is. He seems mysterious and unapproachable, lofty and unattainable. But He gave us the gift of His word to help us know Him. All sixty-six books point to His character and help us to know Him by giving us a glimpse into His heart.

3. The Bible can direct our steps and show us how to live.

When we are confused and don't understand where to turn next, the Bible gives us the wisdom we need to make decisions that honor God. It may not give us specifics about which job to choose or where to live, but when we spend time in His word, we are made more like Him, and in turn, we are able to discern His will from other plans that may look good but are not beneficial to us.

4. The Bible helps us when we are tempted.

We oftentimes forget that if we have decided to live for Christ and walk with Him, we have power to resist the temptation to live in a dishonorable way. The word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, and able to help us resist the temptation to walk away from Christ instead of toward Him.

5. The Bible reminds us of our need for God.

We may be tempted to think that we can walk through our days without God, but the truth is that we are dependent on Him for everything-even our next breath. When we have life characterized by time in His word, we remember that we are His and that we can do nothing apart from Him.
