episode #31 // Sacred Rhythms: Memorizing and Meditating on Scripture // A Conversation with Hunter Beless

In this week’s episode, I chat with Hunter Beless about the importance of memorizing and meditation on Scripture. Hunter shares with us how her love for the Word came from a desperate need for joy after a season of not walking closely with the Lord. Instead of a list of to-dos, Hunter leaves us with a practical perspective on how to incorporate memorizing God’s word into our daily lives.

Hunter Beless is the founder and host of Journeywomen, the author of Read It, See It, Say It, Sing It and Amy Carmichael: The Brown-Eyed Girl Who Learned to Pray. Her favorite places to do ministry are within the four walls of her home and in her local church.

She and her husband have four amazing kiddos who memorize Scripture way faster than they do! When they’re not reading, seeing, saying, or singing the Bible, you can find them camping, riding bikes, or snuggling up with a good book.

MEMORABLE QUOTES

As I opened the pages of Scripture, God used His Word to draw me back to Himself through His Word, and I began to experience joy again. My whole life began to change.

This Word that God has given us has the power to change us.

All of that life change begins at conversion when our dead hearts are made alive in Christ.

I became passionate about Scripture memory just seeing how desperately I needed to be intaking those life-giving words in the midst of a world that was pouring lots of other words into my ears.

There is only one Word that has the power to transform our hearts.

What am I doing today to become the kind of woman to really root myself in the Word of God so that when I need it, I have access to it?

I have realized as a mother, I need it so frequently. I am just on the brink of sin at any given moment.

God’s Word can help keep us from sin.

As much as we need food, we need God’s Word.

The Word took on hands and feet in the person of Jesus. So do we want to draw near to Jesus? Scripture is the way that we can really walk with Jesus, know Him more deeply, and seek to live as those who belong to Him.

Start simply, and simply start.

I love to employ the Psalms in prayer.

I love having the Psalms memorized because I use them so frequently in my prayers for other people.

I guarantee you there is at least one other woman in your local church who wants to be memorizing Scripture.

Incorporate a time of Scripture memory review once a week with that person and then do it together.

The Gospel leads to godliness. The good work that God did in us through the person of His Son leads us to good works.
